B L A H .

This is accurate. On my last week of work before a month long break, my body decided to take a dump on me. I'm done! it yelled. Yesterday morning, I woke up with a scratchy throat, but I quickly drank some hot water, thought I fixed it then made my way to work.  An hour into work I knew I was spiraling down. All the phone calls and conversations I was having weren't helping either... neither was the copious amounts of tea I was drinking.  No matter I thought, I'll go home make a concoction of honeyed drinks, gargle and sleep early. This will surely help. NOPE. I woke up this morning feeling a million times worse than yesterday. Groggy head, weak body, phlegm, extra scratchy throat. 

Luckily today was a school day and not a work day, so I'm not missing out on income, and I'm allowed to miss up to two days of class to pass attendance. BUT STILL. Why couldn't I have been sick next week when I didn't have to worry about work? Why now? 
I think I'm pushing myself too hard, and my body's had enough.

Listening To: John Mayer. If you don't know, John's my end all be all. He's my absolute, number one favorite musician of all time. I've been listening to him since I was 14, and almost 10 years later, I'm still absolutely hooked. Anyways, all this to say that last week he put on a google + hangout and announced his tour! For those that don't know, he's been in and out of surgery for his throat over the last couple years and hasn't been able to speak much less sing of the majority of the time. So announcing this tour is BIG. Sadly, it looks like he's not coming down under, but he has a TON of US dates so I'd def check em out if you're a fan. :]

Reading: Text books. It's all I read and all I have time to read these days. Theories, best practice and history are taking up my time, even though I'm dying to finish (and start) a couple recreational books.

Planning: To get back into healthy eating.  I've slipped a bit since I've been back at work. The foodcourt is just so tempting!! But I'm making it my April goal to eat veggie based/veggie heavy meals for every weekday lunch. I also need to slow down on my carb intake. woah man do I love me some bread.

Watching: a lot of documentaries. In the couple weeks I've watched: Soundcity, Searching for Sugarman, Annie Leibovitz - Behind the Lens, and a short piece on The Solton Sea. If I were to reccommend one, it would definitely be Searching for Sugarman.  It won best documentary at the Oscars this year, and after watching it, you'll know exactly why.  The storytelling and cinemotography are fantastic, and the music featured is so good. Miguel has been listening to Rodriguez's albums on repeat.

Thinking About: The week ahead! I've got a double date with my sister & her man this Tuesday, then my cousin flies in from The Philippines this Thursday, a picnic on Friday and another on Easter Sunday. Plus it's my last week of work before my month long break.  It's going to be hectic, but incredibly fun. 
Making Me Happy: lots of things... good music, quality time with Miguel, hanging out with my family, hot cross buns, easter eggs, triple j mornings, afternoon coffee pick me ups, staying on task, 8 hours of sleep and The Shaytards.

On Keeping Up...

So I'm 4 weeks into the semester, and everything is moving full steam ahead. I'm managing to stay on top of school work, and I feel really productive during class. The teachers and class discussions inspire me to no end, and I feel like I'm studying exactly what I need to. School life is pretty great... but what about everything else?

Truthfully? I feel like I'm sinking.

I'm working at a job that requires me to get up every day at 5 am. My shift goes from 7-3, but I'm not actually back home til about 5 pm. By then, I'm exhausted. As soon as I get home, I start prep for dinner, and an hour later Miguel gets in. We swap cooking days, so I only cook every other day, but sometimes I dread having to cook. Where I used to thoroughly enjoy it, now I feel like I don't have the energy to turn on the stove. It's ridiculous. I think about ordering pizza every.single.day. Other things seem to be falling by the wayside too... things like housework, but I won't bore you with those details.  I then manage to find sometime in the evening to get my readings/homework done, and by 9 pm it's off to bed to do it all over again.

It feels great to be excelling at school, but I'm having a hard time understanding how to balance everything out. My days feel long, and I don't want to feel constantly tired like I do now. It's only the 4th week, and if I keep this up, I'll be completely depleted by the end of the semester.

Please don't take this like I'm complaining; I promise I'm not. I just need a better solution to managing my days.

So I'm asking for help. What can I change? What would you, dear reader, (are there any of you?) do in my situation?  Or should I just pop a vitamin pill and just (WO)MAN UP.

I think I blog best on Saturday mornings.  I've been so super busy as of late, that it seems the only time I have to collect my thoughts are in the early hours of the weekend. This week I'm keeping it short by sharing some of the things I've found around the internet that are keeping me inspired.

1. Have you ever wanted to take a trip around regional Australia? Well now you virtually can. All Summer long, people have been uploading videos of their road trips around OZ, to Triple J's website. They've all just been put together to capture one clever little video.  I'm so inspired to rent a car and just go.

2. Are you a worry wart too? This tip could banish all our worries.

3. Is shampoo free the way to be? I go about half & half with this one.

4. Unlocking the power of the female brain. I knew there was a reason men and women are so different! I can definitely relate with many if not all of his points. The only thing -- not sure how I feel about a man determining these reasonings without a woman's perspective.

5. I am SO in love with this little video! It's definitely made me a little homesick for my best friend and some of that California sunshine.

6. and lastly, Sound City is gone, but Dave Grohl's kept the memory alive forever.  This documentary is up there with my favorites.

Mardi Gras 2013 !

Every year, Sydney throws the most incredible Mardi Gras festival in celebration of LGBT rights.  It's a week long celebration full of parties, picnics and all around tomfoolery, but the Pièce de résistance is the Mardi Gras Parade which closes off the festival in such an amazing way. This year, I was lucky enough to join the Hoopaholics in the parade.

It was BEYOND. The last time I marched in a parade was in high school, where I had a brief stint in colorguard twirling flags to marching band music. So I thought I knew what I was getting into... but this.. this  was nothing like that.  The atmosphere was electric.  As my friends and I joined the Hoopers in line, hula hoop in hand, all my worries about not being as good as these professional seeming hoopstars melted away. The music was blaring, everyone was dressed in bright colors and everyone just seemed so excited. I didn't have time to be worried, I was way too busy having a good time, plus the 4 glasses of wine I had prior were starting to kick in. hah

When the parade kicked off, we made our way down Oxford & Crown streets, and I got my first look at the tons of people lining the sidewalks. CUH-RAY-ZEE. There were a lot of hoopers around me, so there wasn't much room for everyone to properly hula hoop. Unphased, I took to spinning it around my arm and giving kisses and high fives to the crowd. Not sure why they wanted to high five or even kiss me in the first place, but hey who am I to turn them down?  The feeling in the crowd and throughout the parade was fantastic. There was so much love and happiness in the air.  Everyone just seemed to be in such a good mood, and I knew that the LGBT community who deserve more than a parade, were so happy to be united and celebrating.

As someone who strongly believes in equal rights for all and the importance of supporting the LGBTQQI community, it felt so incredible to do my small part in showing solidarity with them by being part of the parade. Yes, hula hooping down Crown St didn't do anything life changing for the community, but it's not about that. It's about showing support. By being in this parade, I felt like I was screaming at the top of my lungs, I am here because I support you and your community. Your rights are important! Because they are.  And while the parade was one big, silly party, it didn't start out as that. It started with a much smaller group of people who decided to make a statement that said we are here and we want to be heard.

Listening To: a lot of Blink 182. I took my sister with me to see them preform at Allphones Arena, and ohmygosh they were just beyond anything I could have expected.  They played all their hits, classics & the new stuff too. I managed to get standing room only, so we were actually pretty close to Mark & Tom. (Travis wasn't able to make it) My inner preteen was dying of happiness.   

Reading: I just started Oliver Twist. Completely random, but I've been craving some classic reading.  I'm only in the first couple chapters, but I'm loving it so far.  Not sure how long it will take me to finish this one because all my school readings have started as well.  I've got about 5 different text books I need to buy, and we've already been assigned extra reading as well. Hellooo college life! 

Planning: My work/school schedule and making sure I give myself enough time to study. I really want to do well this time around, but the added pressure of maintaining a job will not make it easy. I know if I budget my time correctly and keep my obligations as a priority everything will be fine. This probably means my social life will go down the drain, but hey it's just for a couple months right?

Thinking About: Yoga. I've been following a couple youtube-ers who have some amazing yoga videos, and have been really inspired to really see this as a practice.  I have some pretty bad hip joints (how old do I sound?!) but every time I do some deep yoga stretching the aches go away. I want to improve my posture too, and I know yoga can only help. Hopefully I stick with this.  

Making Me Happy: Feeling like Miguel & I are out of the danger zone.  If you've been following along, you know that the last few months were all about budgeting and spending the least amount of money possible.  We were both struggling with jobs and income was not the best.  However, now that we're both working, and the income is coming in, we're starting to feel back to normal again.  We're still obviously trying to save as much as we can, but it feels good to not be as stressed about financials as we were. SUCH a good feeling. :]
